The Cape Town Central City Improvement District’s eye-catching ‘Rainbow Tree Project’ has everyone buzzing after 730 trees were wrapped in colourful cloth to brighten public spaces in downtown Cape Town with an aim of creating a positive vibe and encouraging people to come back to town.
The tree-wrapping is an extension of the CCID’s successful 2020/21 ‘Come Back To Town’ campaign to improve the urban environment, stimulate the CBD economy and encourage people to spend time in town and enjoy themselves, says CEO Tasso Evangelinos.
Over 3000 metres of bright red, blue, yellow, orange and green fabric has been used to wrap Cape Ash and Fever trees, and CCID Urban Management manager Kally Benito says no harm has been done to the trees in the process.
“We’ve used small tacks to adhere the fabric, and have not damaged the trunks of the trees,” she says.
If you find yourself mesmerised at the sight of these bursts of colour, on the sidewalks in Bree, Waterkant and Christiaan Barnard streets, or on Hertzog Boulevard and Walter Sisulu Avenue, or on Thibault Square and Pier Place or in St Georges Mall, make sure to take a selfie and tag #CCIDRainbowTrees on social media.
You could win a weekly prize of R100 to be spent at a CBD retailer if lady luck is on your side.
