After the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital relocated to its new premises in Foreshore, the City Park building has stood empty for several years – until now.
Thanks to a deal between Ennismore, a fastest-growing lifestyle and leisure hospitality company, and Kasada, a leading independent real estate private equity platform dedicated to the hospitality sector in Africa, Cape Town will soon become the first South African home of the world-famous quirky colourful hotel brand, Mama Shelter.

Full of energy and vibrancy, Mama Shelter hotels boast more than just aesthetic and modern. The hotel brand was founded by Serge and Jérémie Trigano who opened the first Mama Shelter in Paris East in 2008.
Since then, Mama Shelter has flourished with over 15 openings in Marseille, Luxembourg, Rome, Lisbon, Paris La Défense, Rennes and Dijon. Mama Shelter Nice will open in June 2024 followed by Cape Town, with future projects set to open in Dubai, Casablanca and Downtown LA.
In December 2023, ingenuity, a prominent property and development company based in the Western Cape, and Kasada announced an agreement to jointly develop the site of the Mama Shelter Cape Town project.
This new vibrant mixed-use development includes hotels, restaurants and retail, and together with Mama Shelter, will help redefine the city’s hospitality landscape with its exuberant and flamboyant personality.

Set to be a drawcard for the City Park building, Mama Shelter Cape Town will feature 127 guestrooms across three room categories and 68 branded residences ranging from studios to one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. Mama Shelter Cape Town will also house meeting rooms, co-working spaces and a gym, along with a pool and pool deck.
Alongside Mama’s classic all-day dining restaurant on the property’s rooftop, the Mother City’s breathtaking landscape will take centre stage – from Table Mountain and the Atlantic Seaboard to Foreshore and the city skyline.
In its new South African home, Mama Shelter Cape Town will also be debuting a new concept, Mama Play: a 742 sqm arcade featuring tenpin bowling, karaoke and event spaces. Ennismore will also open a separate restaurant on Bree Street.
