We love an unconventional hero, and the ‘Owl Box Man’ in Cape Town certainly fits the flight.
A beloved protector of the bird community and the environment, Mike, or ‘The Owl Box Man’, went on a recent rescue mission that saw a red-winged starling stuck on a McDonald’s ‘Play Place’ sign.
The champion of birds had pleaded on his social media for ladder assistance, stating that he simply couldn’t climb the 8-meter distance to get up top.
Big heroes ended up coming to the rescue party from the Bellville Fire Department.
“Amazing compassion, professionalism and respect restored my faith in humanity tonight,” ‘The Owl Box Man’ wrote of their efforts.
“Bird in good shape, just needs some rest,” he had added of the feathery Capetonian.
People praised the efforts on social media. As one user put it “So lovely to see a bunch of men going through such a huge effort to help one little bird. Especially during a time with so much negativity going on.”
While the cynic might wonder ‘why all that effort for just a little bird?’ the story here is one of determination to show kindness to a life, no matter how small in size it may be.
When he’s not rescuing the birds, Mike is making fully installed owl boxes to fit a variant of feathered friends. You can keep up with ‘The Owl Box Man’ here.
