According to SA People, boat tour agency Ocean Safaris captured the moment during an early morning trip. Posting a video on Facebook, the company noted: “What an amazing sighting as it is one of the biggest pods roaming our beautiful coastline. We’ve seen the orcas on four occasions for 2023 so far, which is the most for us so far.”
Orcas have to date been a rare sight in Plettenberg Bay, with only about five sightings each year, as reported by Plett Tourism.
Whale presence in the area is typically between mid-May and February, while the southern right whales appear between June and November. As per Plett Tourism, avid whale watchers can enjoy year-round sightings of the resident Bryde’s whales and pods of bottlenose dolphins. “Good shore and cliff-based whale viewing sites is Plettenberg Park, Robberg Peninsula in the Robberg Nature Reserve, No 1 Beachy Head Drive, Beacon Island Rocks, Van Plettenberg Monument, Lookout Rocks, The Lookout View site and last, but not least, spectacular viewing along Keurboomstrand beaches and look out points.”
