A trip to Cederberg is medicine for the soul, and the journey wouldn’t be complete without an epic hike. The area is renowned for its spectacular landscapes: sandstone caves and rocky overhangs shelter some of the region’s finest examples of ancient rock art. And CapeNature is at the helm of ensuring that every experience is picture-perfect.

Besides nurturing nature, CapeNature offers memorable, authentic eco-tourism experiences to local and international visitors. These vary from adrenaline-filled pursuits such as bouldering, kloofing and kayaking, to more leisurely activities like hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and whale watching.
We’re going hiking:
We got our squad together to embark on an epic road trip to Algeria in the Cederberg Wilderness Area. One of the Western Cape’s most spectacular hikes awaits: the waterfall hike!
Algeria is about 250 kilometres from Cape Town, so make sure you get an early start. Along the way, there are plenty of spots to fill up (on petrol and snacks). To enter the reserve, you’ll need a permit which can be purchased in advance.
When you arrive at the CapeNature Algeria offices, friendly staff will get you sorted with everything you need to smash the waterfall hike. You’ll be guided through the route – and might feel the urge to buy a lekker sunhat for your trek. There’s a shop that stocks all the essentials.

The hike:
The waterfall hike is a moderately steep trail that leads from Algeria up to the Middelberg Waterfall. The route is clearly signposted. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the top (a three-hour round trip).
Along the way, you’ll be treated to Mother Nature’s finest rocks and caves, as well as hints of history, including remarkable examples of San and Khoi rock art.

What awaits at the top is truly spectacular: a breathtaking waterfall encapsulated with fluffy green moss and gorgeous views. This is the perfect place to stop for a swim and have a picnic before beginning your descent.
Capture the moment:
Adventures with CapeNature are ones you’ll remember forever. Be sure to capture the moment at the reserve’s new outdoor picture frame.

Stay a little while:
From bouldering to donkey cart adventures, there’s so much on offer in Algeria. Extend your stay by booking into one of the many places to stay. There are gorgeous campsites and comfortable cottages to choose from.
