According to a recent study by Australian restaurant platform Chef’s Pencil, which analysed over 4 400 restaurants across 89 cities, Cape Town’s late-night dining scene is notably lacking.
Chef’s Pencil assessed the availability of late-night dining by examining reservation apps and independent websites to determine the latest seating times over weekends. The cities were then ranked based on the median of these times.
The findings show that Middle Eastern and South Asian cities lead in late-night dining, with Cairo topping the list, where the average last seating is at midnight.
Jeddah, New Delhi, and Mumbai follow closely with last seatings at 11:30pm.
Madrid, known for its late-night culture, ranks fifth globally with a last seating time of 11pm, alongside Athens, which also has late dining options.
In contrast, Cape Town’s average last seating time is at an early 9pm, similar to Helsinki, Sydney and Seoul, and slightly ahead of Auckland.
Auckland and Luxembourg, the lowest-ranked cities, have their last seatings at a mere 8:30pm, a time when many people are just beginning their evening.
