World-renowned South African visual artist, Nelson Makamo, has given his new Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe a personal artistic touch and it has proven to be one of the best moving canvases yet.
According to Porsche Newsroom, Nelson Makamo’s visual art was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine’s ‘The art of optimism – which features people changing how we see the world. His latest work on his 911 is strictly from his own persona.
Growing up in rural Modimolle, Limpopo, Makamo always dreamed of owning a Porsche 911 of his own one day, reports Sowetan Live. Now a world-famous artist, Makamo ordered a Jet Black Metallic 911 Carrera Coupe with the aim to transform his dream into a moving canvas.
At his studio based in Johannesburg, Nelson hand-painted selected components and panels of his car such as the rear bumper, front seat mouldings, door panel inserts and handles, dash panel inserts, park brake console and side mirror covers – before taking them back to Porsche Centre Johannesburg for its final lacquer coating and fitting.
The left side door panels insert features ‘Mma’ – a personal abbreviation that means ‘Mother’ in Makamo’s home language of Sepedi. This is the first time he has mentioned his mother in his artwork.
Makamo says the project titled ‘My Life in Motion’ does not only reflect on his successes, but also the various people he has met throughout his life: “I always knew I was going to own a Porsche, I just never knew that my relationship with the brand would start this way — and it’s only the beginning.”
CEO of Porsche SA, Toby Venter says the project has provided outstanding motivation.
“Working with Nelson Makamo has been inspirational and this commission is on a level we’ve never seen before. This is a truly bespoke art installation worthy of any gallery”, says Toby.
“In addition, it illustrates the lengths Porsche SA will go to; the creativity and flexibility of our team to accommodate a request as personal as this. Porsche customers have a virtually endless array of options available through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur to make their Porsche completely individual, but then when a unique customer such as Nelson chooses to do something extraordinary, we are delighted to accommodate his wishes.”
