As locals, we are a bit more hesitant when visiting attractions in Cape Town and are more inclined to explore our beautiful city for free, as many activities in Cape Town are too pricey for locals to enjoy, even more so if you’re a senior citizen.
Luckily, many establishments in Cape Town accommodate South Africans at a special price when you present your South African ID card. With the high cost of living, a discounted rate is always welcome.
Here is a list of activities and establishments in Cape Town that offer a further discount to senior citizens, the OGs of the City:
- Kirstenbosch Gardens – Free to all pensioners on Tuesdays, except on public holidays.
- Robben Island Museum Tours – Pensioners pay R250 on Mondays and Wednesdays.
- City Sightseeing Red Bus – Pensioner price: R245.
- City Sightseeing Red Bus and lunch – Pensioner price: R328.
- City Sightseeing Canal or Harbour cruise – Pensioner price: R45.
- Ceres steam train to the Elgin Market – Pensioners receive a 20% discount.
- Spur Steak Ranches has a seniors’ menu, valid for every day of the week.
- Ster Kinekor offers pensioners a 22% discount on all of its ticket types, except on Tuesdays on half-price specials.
- Metrorail offers pensioners a 50% discount on all journeys, every day of the week, during off-peak times (9:30am – 2:30pm).
- Cape Point – Flying Dutchman Funicular – Pensioner price: R52 for a return ticket.
- Table Mountain Aerial Cableway – Pensioner price: R130 for a return ticket.
- Two Oceans Aquarium – Pensioner price: R185 all-day rate / R140 from 3pm – every day of the week.
- The Iziko South African Museum – Pensioner price: R20.
- Castle of Good Hope – Pensioner price: R25.
- World of Birds – Pensioner price: R85.
