On Saturday, 22 November 2025, Walmart opened its first Walmart-branded store in Africa at Clearwater Mall, Roodepoort, marking the retailer’s direct entry into South Africa under the Walmart name, reports Cape {town} Etc.

The store employs more than 80 people and sources from local suppliers, part of a plan to support South African small and medium enterprises (SME’s) and boost the local economy.

Andrea Albright, executive vice-president and chief growth officer for Walmart International, said the company’s aim is simple: ‘to give customers a reliable way to save’ and to offer consistent, everyday low prices that improve household budgets (Massmart).

Shoppers will find fresh and frozen food, groceries, clothing, baby items, electronics, toys and home goods under one roof.

The store pairs in-store choice with a new Africa-specific Walmart Shopping app offering rapid delivery in the surrounding area.

Walmart shoppers will find:

  • Sixty-minute online delivery within five kilometres.
  • Globally popular toys such as Labubu and Hot Wheels.
  • Drew Barrymore-branded small appliances.
  • Pen & Gear back-to-school stationery and Essence beauty ranges.
  • Imported confectionery and international soft drinks.
  • A-grade beef from a family farming group and frozen prepared meals.

BusinessTech reports retail analysts saying that the launch will sharpen competition on price and convenience across Johannesburg’s West Rand while offering a new option for holiday shopping.
