The Banhoek Valley was known as ‘De Bange Hoek’ during the 1700s. ‘Bang’, translated from Dutch and meaning ‘fear’ in Afrikaans, refers to the trepidation experienced by those who travelled over the steep mountain pass where wild animals such as lions and leopards roamed.
Today, vines are planted in rows across the mountain folds at elevations of up to 640 metres. The majority of the area is dryland farmed thanks to an abundance of rain, and some of the world’s best wines are produced here.

If you find yourself wanting to explore on an adventure through history while getting a taste of some of the most delectable cultivars, check out these five wine farms in Banhoek Valley:
Thelema Mountain Vineyards
In 1983, Gyles Webb left his accounting career in Durban to pursue winemaking. After he bought Thelema, the manor house was restored and the first wines debuted in 1988 under the label. Thelema’s wines consistently sold out within a month after release by the mid-90s, establishing it as a highly sought-after wine estate in South Africa.
Thelema boasts some of the highest points in Stellenbosch. The elevated location and rich red soils create an optimal environment for producing high-quality wine grapes, and it is here where you can savour the Thelema range with a picturesque view. The site is also home to Sutherland Vineyards, which boasts a range of small-scale, cool-climate wines.

Capensis
Capensis, meaning ‘from the Cape’ is rooted in the Banghoek Valley. The estate vineyard, Fijnbosch, takes its name from the Dutch settlers, referring to the natural vegetation, interpreted as ‘fine bush’ or ‘fine woods’. Spanning almost 20 acres, chardonnay vines thrive in clay soils on the elevated, steep terrain of the Groot Drakenstein mountains in the Banhoek Valley.
Here, immersive tastings explore the realm of South African Chardonnay. You can book a private tasting experience, note that tastings are limited to two bookings per day.
