Update: 14 November, 2pm
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), alongside Table Mountain National Park, has announced the rescheduling of its annual Take a Hike Day to Monday, 17 November 2025, in a proactive response to weather forecasts predicting adverse conditions.
This decision prioritises the safety of participants while ensuring the continuation of the event’s beloved environmental clean-up initiative.
The event, which has drawn enthusiasm from hundreds of outdoor lovers in previous years, now falls under the watchful eyes of the skies, with expected winds compelling organisers to adjust times for the safety and comfort of hikers.
Check-in for pre-registered participants will take place between 06:00 and 08:00, and those wishing to contribute to the litter hand-in at the Top Station must do so by 14:00.
The adjustment is designed to accommodate the predicted winds expected later in the afternoon.
‘Safety is always our top priority,’ says Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC.
‘We appreciate everyone’s understanding and enthusiasm and look forward to welcoming our hikers on Monday for a meaningful morning on the mountain,’
Now in its fifth year, the Take a Hike Day initiative encourages participants to hike, explore, and clean as they traverse the trails of Table Mountain, fostering a community spirit of leaving nature better than it was found.
This cornerstone event in TMACC’s sustainability calendar has turned into an inspiring collective effort, rallying families and volunteers who care deeply for one of South Africa’s most iconic natural landmarks.
For those eager to participate, registration remains open through the official sign-up link: Register here.
All existing registrations have been confirmed valid for the rescheduled date.
Megan Taplin, Park Manager of Table Mountain National Park, expressed her support for the decision to reschedule, highlighting the importance of safety in such community gatherings.
‘It’s heartening to see so many people coming together to make a difference for the environment. Take a Hike Day captures the spirit of collective care that defines Cape Town’s relationship with this mountain,’ she remarked.
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), in partnership with SANParks, invites Capetonians and visitors alike to lace up their hiking boots for the annual Take a Hike day 2025 on Saturday, 15 November 2025.
This popular initiative encourages participants to take to the mountain – hiking, exploring and cleaning as they go – while collecting litter along the trails and helping to “leave it better than you found it.” The day celebrates both conservation and community connection to one of the world’s most celebrated natural landmarks.
Now in its fifth year, Take a Hike day 2025 has grown into a signature TMACC event, attracting hundreds of nature enthusiasts, families, and community volunteers.
Last year more than 300 hikers have participated, collecting nearly 60 kilograms of litter from Table Mountain’s trails, a simple but powerful act of care for Cape Town’s beloved natural wonder.

This year, participants can take part in ‘Take a Hike Day’ by choosing one of three scenic routes, each offering a unique experience of the mountain:
- Platteklip Gorge : one of the more popular hiking routes on Table Mountain
- The Contour Path: starting next to the small traffic circle at the Lower Cableway Station, a steep climb for more experienced hikers.
- Kloof Corner: a shorter but steeper climb with breathtaking views over the city and Atlantic Ocean.
Each route offers hikers the chance to enjoy Table Mountain at their own pace while helping to keep it pristine for generations to come.
Participants will receive a free cable car ride down, along with snack packs and refreshments at the summit, courtesy of TMACC.

‘Take a Hike day is a wonderful example of how collaboration between SANParks, TMACC, and the community can make a meaningful difference, reminding us that conservation works best when everyone plays their part.’ says Megan Taplin, Park Manager at Table Mountain National Park.
Safety and Preparation
The weather on Table Mountain can change quickly, and safety remains TMACC’s top priority. Participants are urged to come prepared and keep the following in mind:
- Apply sunscreen and wear a hat or cap to protect against the sun.
- Bring enough water to stay hydrated throughout the hike.
- Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy hiking shoes with good grip.
- Pack a light windbreaker or rain jacket, as mountain weather can shift rapidly.
- Stick to the route and demarcated pathways.
- Every hiking group should have a leader – the larger the group, the greater the need for one.
- Keep together and hike at the pace of the slowest member. Do not split up or take different routes.
- Leave non-essential valuables and jewellery at home.
- Watch the weather and time, and turn back if conditions worsen.
- Know what to do in an emergency and save emergency number 021 937 0300 on your phone.
- Download one of the available outdoor safety apps that can help locate you in the event of a mishap.
Getting There
Participants can park at the Lower Tafelberg Road parking area and take the free Cableway shuttle to the Lower Cableway Station, and make their way to the hiking route that they have chosen for check-in.
