It’s a rarity to associate dentistry with a day at the spa, but that’s what it feels like when you go to OptiSmile in Sea Point.
The practice was founded by Dr Clifford Yudelman and he and his team are blazing the trail for progressive dental care in South Africa.
Dr Yudelman returned to Cape Town after 32 years abroad in London, San Diego, and Perth. His late father, also a dentist, inspired him to build a state-of-the-art facility here, in the Mother City. You’re in good hands.

Forget everything you’ve come to know about a visit to the dentist, starting with the setting itself. OptiSmile’s practice is light and bright, complete with modern wooden finishes and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. Dentist rooms with a view? Check!

A look around each doctor’s suite will be your first indication of the stellar service to follow. The equipment is top-notch, allowing a new level of thorough understanding when it comes to your teeth and oral health. This is no in-and-out operation. Education is the foundation of each appointment.
Whether you’re after an aesthetic or restorative service, OptiSmile has what you’re after. They specialise in everything from teeth whitening to dental implants. Behind each procedure is a personalised approach to making you feel your best — and maintaining it.

Expanding on its person-centric approach, OptiSmile ensures that its services are attainable, offering payment plans and scaled dental solutions for you to choose from. So, if whiter teeth are on your Christmas list, this is for you.
Teeth whitening by OptiSmile:
Depending on your goals and budget, you can whiten your teeth with a take-home kit, an in-chair whitening treatment, or a combination of both.
1. Take-home treatment:
A take-home tooth whitening kit can provide excellent results in the comfort of your home and is your most affordable teeth whitening option. The process is simple and it doesn’t take long to see remarkable results.
First, your dentist or hygienist will take an impression of your teeth to make custom bleaching trays. Once the trays are ready, you will be given two to three syringes of bleaching gel to take home with you. Take-home bleach is under R300, making this an affordable long-term solution.
You will then use the gel in the trays for 30 minutes per day until you achieve your desired level of whiteness. Some people may see results within two weeks, while others may need to continue bleaching for up to three months. Either way, it is a simple and effective way to achieve beautiful, white teeth.
- Cost: From R5 727 (actual value: R9 913).
- Appointment: 2 hours
- Included: A welcome exam, X-rays, scans, cleaning and your custom whitening kit (with gels).

2. In-chair whitening special:
This option is done in-office by a professional because a higher concentration of bleach is used for a faster, more immediate result.
How it works? A protective barrier will be placed around your teeth to shield your gums from the bleaching gel. Then, the dentist or hygienist will apply the gel to your teeth and use a special light to activate the gel.
- Cost: From R8 395
- Appointment: 2.5 hours
- Included: In-chair whitening with a special light, welcome exam, X-rays, hi-resolution photos, scans and cleaning.

3. A WOW! combo:
This option provides you with the best of both: an in-chair whitening session using a special light and a take-home kit to ensure that your results continue to improve and can be maintained.
- Cost: From R8 395 (saving R1 217)
- Appointment: 3 hours
- Included: In-chair whitening with special light, welcome exam, X-rays, hi-resolution photos, scans and cleaning.
- Additions: Whitening trays and three take-home gels (R2 450 extra).

Teeth whitening facts from OptiSmile:
- The most common type of teeth whitening is bleaching, which uses a special gel containing peroxide. As the peroxide breaks down, it produces oxygen molecules that penetrate the enamel and break up stains.
- There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all bleaching procedure, and each person should have a customised bleaching program that suits them and their teeth.
- After your teeth are professionally whitened, you will need to maintain your new smile with monthly home maintenance using customised bleaching trays and good oral hygiene habits.
- The most common cause of stained teeth is tobacco use, which can lead to yellowing of the teeth over time. Other causes of tooth discolouration include the consumption of dark-coloured liquids such as coffee, tea, and red wine and poor dental hygiene. Ageing also contributes to teeth becoming less bright, as the tooth enamel gets thinner, and the dentin becomes darker.
- You may experience some discomfort during the whitening process if you have sensitive teeth. However, steps can be taken to minimise sensitivity, such as using a desensitising gel before and after treatment.
- Professional whitening is the best option for achieving a brighter smile. Unlike over-the-counter products, which can vary significantly in quality and effectiveness, professional whitening treatments are regulated by dental associations to ensure safety and efficacy.
- Clinical studies have shown that charcoal tooth-whitening products are no more effective than regular toothpaste at whitening teeth.
