To commemorate Heritage Day, Chef Gary Coetzee has added an array of classic South African dishes to The Bistro’s menu at Brookdale Estate in Paarl.
This special menu will be available from 19 to 24 September, served alongside a complimentary glass of Brookdale’s Mason Road wine.

Located in the estate’s cellar, The Bistro at Brookdale promises a relaxed, modern Paarl Winelands dining experience, built and decorated in a contemporary style and comprising both indoor as well as outdoor dining spaces on the wide terrace overlooking the vineyards.
With no other buildings in sight, it appears as if you are in another world. Yet, there’s no desire to imagine yourself anywhere else, for this scenery belongs to none other than the breathtakingly beautiful South Africa.
For the main course, the Heritage Day menu features a plant-based delight with a potato, spinach, and feta pie served alongside a chickpea, avocado, and sun-dried tomato salad. Alternatively, there’s the hearty dombolo and lamb stew served with baby vegetables, perfectly complemented by Brookdale’s newly launched Mason Road GSM, a blend of grenache, syrah, cinsault, and petit syrah.
For those who prefer lighter fare, the menu offers biltong soup with a mature cheddar cheese straw or a modern interpretation of bobotie served in a crisp rice taco with egg custard, spiced prune chutney, and tomato salsa.
Guests can enhance their dining experience by adding traditional side dishes like chakalaka, pap and smoor, or braai mielie with harissa aioli and coconut to any of the menu offerings.
To cap off this heritage feast, Chef Gary has developed a culinary creation called ‘Milk Tart meets Hertzoggie.’ This dessert comprises a coconut and cinnamon custard tart with apricot gel, accompanied by honey and apricot gelato and a sprinkling of cinnamon crumb.

Alternatively, indulge in a platter of South African cheeses, featuring Cremezola, Gay’s Prince Albert, Belnori Ash Log, and Dalewood Brie, perfectly complemented by a glass of the limited-release Mason Road Cap Classique, celebrating South African flavours.
