If a market nestled in some of the most scenic views the country has to offer already sounds like music to your ears, let me paint the symphony, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
You’ll lose yourself in the food choices. Artistically presented sushi or mouth-watering lamb imaginings? In fact, of the lamb from The Lamb and Tuna Man stall, a companion described the experience as ‘Christmas in a moment’ – which speaks for itself in terms of how much joy one bite can bring. Then there’s the curry assortments, fresh breads, chocolate desires, churro thrills, Asian-style deep-fried chicken noodles drenched in peanut sauce that will have you waiting for the next stall pop up just to get a whiff of the stuff. I could go on about the food spectrum for hours – and I am not someone who gets excited by just any kind of dish.
Beyond what will make your stomach inarguably delighted, it is the energy of the experience that really marks the trip as something you’ve been longing for – togetherness. From the artist who presents his gallery out front and will happily tell anyone willing to listen to his story, to the buzz of a community tied together with people enjoying picnics on their kaleidoscope of blankets, the laughter of children that we have forgotten, the love of couples and friends who waited months to reunite, and all of us existing under the same great big marvellous sunset that smiles down on us in her assortment of colours.
Of course, the views cannot be truly imagined and with the added elements of precious valleys, luscious green hues and sparkling water bodies. The clouds got so close that I felt I could taste them. These elements are all masterpieces on their own – but the added bonus of shared happiness and a tasty meal to boast, only make them that much better.
The ‘community market’ of Cape Point Vineyards as it is so humbly presented, is one of the top activities for anyone visiting Cape Town for good reason. However, I’d argue that as we have reached a point in time as close to life pre-pandemic as ever, it is essential for anyone looking to remember what community feels like in one realm.
