As the festive season approaches, Cape Town is preparing for an influx of local and international visitors eager to immerse themselves in the splendour of the Mother City.
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is anticipating one of its busiest times of the year, with numerous visitors flocking to what is one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
‘December in Cape Town is truly spectacular, and Table Mountain is deservedly at the top of every visitor’s itinerary,’ says Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC.
The city’s beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and warm hospitality combine to make it a prime destination for holidaymakers. However, an influx of tourists also translates to busier roads and packed tourist sites, necessitating a bit of planning for an enjoyable visit.
Planning your visit
- Arrive early or late: The Cableway enjoys immense popularity during summer, so consider arriving early for the first car or later in the afternoon when crowds might lessen. For updates on weather and waiting times, download the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway app, available on both the App Store and Google Play.
- Use Park ‘n Ride: With limited public parking along Tafelberg Road, the free Cableway shuttle, which runs every 20 minutes, serves as an efficient alternative to help you reach the Lower Station.
- Buy online: Secure your visit by purchasing tickets online. They remain valid for seven days, offering flexibility should your plans shift.
- Fast Track option: For those pressed for time, consider Fast Track tickets to bypass queues and access the cable cars faster.
- Capacity management: On particularly busy days, entry will be limited to ticket holders only, so it’s advisable to purchase tickets in advance.
What to wear and how to stay safe
The weather on Table Mountain can shift rapidly. While you might experience warm, sunny conditions in the City Bowl, the summit can be a chilly, windy spot. Parker advises visitors to dress in layers and to stay hydrated. Comfortable, suitable footwear is essential, as slipslops and sandals can lead to accidental slips on the rocky terrain.
Creating memorable experiences
Sharing experiences with loved ones is what this season is all about. Parker suggests several ways to make the trip even more memorable:
- Hike and ride: Tackle the Platteklip Gorge hiking route, and upon reaching the summit, reward yourself with a relaxing cable car ride back down. Alternatively, ride up first and then explore the trails at your own pace.
- Walk the summit: Explore the easy walking paths crisscrossing the summit, taking in the diverse flora and unique rock formations, and capturing stunning photographs along the way.
- Sunrise or sunset: Experience the magic of the first cable car at 08h00 or catch the final ride at 20h00 until January 2026 for breathtaking views.
- Family adventure: Enjoy a family-friendly outing and learn more about Table Mountain’s biodiversity through free guided walks available from 09h00 to 15h00.
- Contribute to conservation: Keep the mountain pristine by disposing of litter appropriately, leaving it better than you found it.
- Fuel up: Treat yourself to snacks or meals from the {Food outlets at the summit, perfect for recharging after a day of exploration.
- Shop local: At the Shop at the Top, grab unique souvenirs to commemorate your visit.
- Capture moments: Don’t miss out on a photo opportunity at the iconic New7Wonder of Nature frame next to the Shop at the Top, perfect for showcasing your adventure.
Parker emphasizes that Table Mountain is not merely a backdrop; it is integral to the city’s identity. ‘It is where people come to relax, spend time with loved ones, and witness a view like no other,’
