Cycling journey from Norway to Cape Town is garnering attention as artist and backpack cyclist Annabelle Golden pedals through Congo on her way south, sharing each stage with a growing online audience, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Golden, known as @grainonthego, has turned her Africa crossing into a slow-travel story that feels both adventurous and deeply personal.
A cycling journey
Golden said she first fell in love with bikepacking after a 2018 cycling trip through Austria. ‘It was such a cool way to travel, and it exposed me to different styles of travelling,’ she said, explaining how the experience changed her outlook.
Her wider journey began in 2024 and she crossed from Spain into Africa in January 2025 before cycling through Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
She also continues to blend creativity with life on the road. 2oceansvibe reports that Golden funds parts of her trip through her digital work, while her Instagram updates show the pair still moving towards South Africa. In one post, she wrote, ‘My name’s Annabelle and I’m riding my bike from Norway to South Africa.’
For followers, the journey offers an unusually close look at Africa, one country and one campsite at a time.
