Cape Town Air Access has revealed that LATAM Airlines will launch new direct flights between São Paulo, Brazil, and Cape Town starting September 2026.
This new service marks a significant moment as LATAM becomes the first South American airline to operate direct flights to the Mother City, effectively bridging a vital gap in international connectivity for the region.
The introduction of this route comes in response to a rising demand for better connectivity between Cape Town and South America.
This year, the two-way passenger traffic between these regions saw an impressive growth of 8% from January to August, culminating in approximately 41 000 travellers throughout the period.
By the close of 2025, it is reported that this figure is expected to nearly reach pre-pandemic levels, with projections estimating just under 70,000 two-way passengers.

Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro and the official spokesperson of Cape Town Air Access, expressed enthusiasm about the new service, stating, ‘We are excited to welcome LATAM Airlines to Cape Town. This milestone directly supports our strategy to unlock access to high-growth markets, including Brazil. As we continue expanding Cape Town’s global reach, this direct service will open new and exciting opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism, driving meaningful economic impact for the region.’
The flights will be operated using the modern Boeing 787-9 aircraft, renowned for its efficiency and passenger comfort.
This state-of-the-art aircraft promises to offer an enjoyable long-haul flying experience, which is expected to attract tourists eager to explore Cape Town and South Africa’s stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures.
Provincial Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer has highlighted the importance of this direct route, stating, ‘This connection is a major milestone for the Western Cape. It will boost tourism, expand trade opportunities, and attract investment while strengthening the province’s position as a globally connected destination for both business and leisure,’
In addition to Cape Town, LATAM Airlines recently announced its network expansion to over 60 airports across Brazil, with plans for new international routes to South Africa, Belgium, and the Netherlands, further signifying the airline’s commitment to global connectivity.
Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, shared his excitement about this new connection, reflecting on previous discussions with the LATAM team during a trade mission to São Paulo. ‘This direct service is a real game-changer for Cape Town,’ Vos said.
‘It creates a south-to-south travel and trade corridor that brings in more tourists, boosts commerce, strengthens cultural ties, and unlocks new opportunities for our people. It gives local businesses a foothold in global markets, supports jobs, and makes Cape Town even more competitive globally.’
He also credited the Cape Town Air Access partnership for their relentless efforts to realise such opportunities.
