Wine tastings are not solely reserved for the summer months. There is something really comforting about sitting by a roaring fire, enjoying a hot serving of soup while also sipping at your favourite wine. We have rounded up a few wine farms in the area that now offer wine and soup tastings for the winter season.
Le Pommier
Le Pommier meaning ‘the apple tree’ in French was once an apple orchard; it was previously a part of the 300-year-old Zorgvliet farm. You will still find a couple of these apple trees today – scattered on Le Pommier’s farm. Nestled amongst the vineyards at the foot of the Simonsberg, the setting now also offers a Banhoek country cuisine restaurant with glorious mountain views, award-winning wines, country lodging, and an ideal and cosy location for outdoor weddings or conferences.
This winter, Le Pommier treats visitors to three delicious winter pairings: a pizza and wine pairing, a South African food and wine pairing, and a wine and soup pairing. As part of the wine and soup pairing, guests are treated to three carefully selected soups, paired with three of Le Pommier’s best wines.
The Le Pommier Sauvignon Blanc pairs magnificently with roasted butternut soup as it balances out the sweetness of the butternut. With a bit of bacon and a little kick of the curry at the end, makes this your perfect winter day pairing.
The tomato and basil soup is paired with their dry Rosé. The creaminess of the tomato soup pairs great with the dryness of the Rosé. Tomatoes are naturally high in acid and Rosé tend to be quite fruity, which enhances the tomato flavour of the soup.
Lastly, MAC Cabernet Franc/Malbec makes a great pairing with lentil soup. Cabernet Franc is a tart and acidic red wine that has a distinct black pepper and earth taste that beautifully complements the savoury flavours of the lentil soup.
