The City of Cape Town has advised hiking enthusiasts that bookings for the Steenbras River Gorge and Crystal Pools Hiking Trail will only open on Friday, 1 November 2024, reports Cape {town} Etc.

While bookings for the much-loved trail typically open from 1 October every hiking season, a wet winter and unforeseen delays in ongoing repair work caused the booking season to be postponed by one month.
According to the City, an unusually high rainfall over a short period this past winter season led to the water levels rising significantly across the Steenbras River Gorge and Crystal Pools Hiking Trail.
As a result, the Steenbras Nature Reserve team was able to assess parts of the trail only a few days ago, subsequently discovering that several sections of the trail had been damaged.
‘The in-house team has already started the necessary maintenance work on Friday, 27 September, and we are confident that the trail will be ready to open to the public by 1 November 2024,’ said the City in a statement. ‘This adjustment ensures that all sections of the trail are ready for public use when hiking resumes.’
Commenting on the announcement, community Facebook group Hiking Cape Town’s admin said: ‘Permits will sell out quickly so make sure to book in advance’.
Suffice it to say, those looking to explore this memorable trail should circle 1 November 2024 in their calendars now.
