Starting off our list of things to do in Montagu at Montagu museum. Montagu museum is home to a collection of oil paintings and drawings by South African artist Francios Krige. One of his most famous pieces, “Begrafnis in die Karoo” (Burial in the Karoo), which he left to the Museum, is a part of the collection. The museum was built in 1907 and was designated a national monument in 1976.

2. Montagu Village Market
The Montagu Village market is a great place to learn about the culture of Montagu. Here, you can find food items from the Netherlands, like Dutch-style plaaskaas, pies, eggs, home-baked rusks, goat’s cheese, juicy jams, olive oil, and freshly picked vegetables. You can also find other goods here like old tools, handcrafted jewelry, wireworks hand-dyed clothing, and unique gifts. 3. Badskloof Trail
This 5.1 km trail is a great way to spend some time outside. It’s an out-and-back trail, so you can turn around whenever you want. 4. Platform 62 – Wine Experience
PLATFORM 62 is located on the main road in Ashton, Western Cape. It is about 180-200 kilometers from Cape Town. This makes it the perfect place to stop and rest on your journey along Route 62, which goes through the Klein Karoo.

5. Montagu Winery
The Montagu Co-operative Wine cellar Limited is on Route 62, at the start of the Little Karoo, about 200 kilometers from Cape Town. The cellar quickly expanded, and in 1948 it was decided to purchase the property (which is still in use) under the chairmanship of Mr. KW Carl du Toit. The cellar was constructed under the direction of wine pioneers Dr. Costa and Mr. Moni, and wine production started at that time

6. Montagu Nature Garden
Montagu Nature Garden is the perfect place to go if you love the outdoors. It is surrounded by tea gardens and mountains. The garden was founded in 1954 and has a lot of flowers, shrubs, and tree species. This includes fynbos, geophytes, succulents, and a variety of Vygies that bloom in the spring. The garden is rejuvenating because it has a walking path with benches, great scenery, and flowing streams.

7. Kogmanskloofpas
The R62 provincial road is a road in the Western Cape, South Africa. The road goes through the Langeberg mountain range. One of the first ways to travel inland through that mountain range was through the Cogmanskloof Pass. The pass was made by Thomas Charles John Bain in 1877.

8. Old English Fort 1899
The Old English Fort was built in 1899 during the Second Boer War. It is a national monument that is located on the ridge of Tunnel in Cogmanskloof. The fort was designed by William Robertson and chosen for its location by Lieutenant Colonel Sidney of the Royal Field Artillery.
9. HIDE | Montagu
HIDE | MONTAGU is on a hillside within the exclusive Le Domaine Eco (Nature) Reserve. You can get there by car, but you have to go through a working farm. It also has exclusive access to the Montagu (CBR) Dam. The Dam is really beautiful and you can see a lot of birds there, like African Fish Eagles. If you’re looking for romantic things to do in Montagu, this place is perfect!

10. Joubert House
Joubert Huis is a museum on Long Street that shows what life was like in the rural 1850s. An extensive collection of vintage toys includes rare handcrafted porcelain dolls with unique serial numbers. These dolls have historically accurate clothing, down to undergarments and leather shoes.

11. Kloof Farm Stall (Die Kloof Padstal)
The Route 62 Restaurant and Farm Stall, also known as Die Kloof Padstal, has won the hearts of many tourists and locals with its lovely traditional dishes. The farm stall also sells a variety of gifts, crafts, handbags, hats, books, and locally made dried fruit. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Montagu.
