February is the month of love, but February 14, Valentine’s Day, is the day set aside for declaring and reaffirming feelings for the one or ones you cherish the most. If you’re going to do Valentine’s Day, you may as well go big, the Cape Town way.

Bring out the romantic in you by showing that special person in your life how much they mean to you with one of these grand Capetonian gestures.

1. Get married on Robben Island

Make it an affair to remember: each year, couples line up to get married at the chapel on the historical Robben Island. It’s certainly not a traditional wedding venue, but there’s something to be said for its originality.

So far, over 300 couples have tied the knot on Robben Island, with Home Affairs Minister Siyabonga Cwele officiating the mass weddings over the years.

Declaring love to a partner with the hope of forever could be the ultimate gift, so you walk down the aisle in the classic chapel located at the centre of the island.

If the ship has sailed for you this Valentine’s Day – the paperwork may take time – you can table this big plan for 2024. Just be sure to get the necessary documentation ready in advance.

2. Book a romantic sunset cruise

There’s something so romantic about sailing the deep blue sea. In Cape Town, there are countless companies that offer cruises in Hout Bay or the Waterfront – perfect places to set sail on a sunset cruise.

Book a cruise for you and your partner and enjoy the zen and romance that the ocean has to offer.

You are guaranteed to score brownie points with a romantic sunrise or sunset cruise. During the summer, the sunsets just after 7pm should give you ample time to throw in a dinner or another activity afterwards.

Select a cruise that meets both of your desires to make it extra special.

3. Treat your love to wine tasting

In Cape Town, you do not have to drive a long distance to go wine tasting. Close to the City, you’ll find the Constantia and Steenberg wine estates, where you can sip on some bubbly or your wine of choice and soak up the scenery with your favourite person.

Extend the trip and make it a romantic getaway for two to the Winelands Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Elgin and Robertson.

Book a table for you and your Valentine at any one of the tasting rooms to enjoy some vino or make a day of it and enjoy lunch at one of the on-site restaurants.
