While we may be experiencing a shortage of electricity, we most certainly still have a surplus of classic South African humour in Mzansi. Saffas tend to have a knack for turning any given sociopolitical situation – no matter how difficult or serious it might be – into pure comic relief.
And as we can see, loadshedding is no exception. Since its implementation a few years ago, social media platforms have all been buzzing with a series of memes, skits and fun challenges that make light of our circumstances (excuse the pun, but know that it was very much intended).
The kind of innovation we need from Eskom at this point. #LoadShedding pic.twitter.com/LWOL7JjtUm

If you hit the search button on any of your socials, you’ll see that there are a plethora of hashtag variations that all have to do with loadshedding or Eskom. Some of these hashtags include (but are not limited to) #eskomchallenge, #loadsheddingvibes, and #eishkom.
You might even find a good #loadsheddinghack or two if you’re lucky.
A popular trend that’s been making its way across South African “For You Pages” on TikTok is the #loadsheddingchallenge. In scrolling through these hilarious videos, Cape {town} Etc’s Tauhira Ajam stumbled upon @zzeyebrows_, whose video shows us that even loadshedding can be an excuse for a party and felt it needed to be shared.

So add a hashtag and join the fun to make those two and a half hours (or longer) go just a little bit faster.
