Lello’s Deli by Scarpetta has brought another taste of Italy to the centre of Cape Town’s leisure district. Famiglia, vibrant produce and the authentic flavours of Italy are at the top of this recipe’s ingredient list.
Run by the Turilli family’s third generation, this neighbourhood artisanal food store has been inspired by the food ideology that their Nonno Lello left behind.

Lello’s Deli by Scarpetta opened in November 2021 in the centre of De Waterkant.
The Turilli family has experience working together in a food-centred venture. All four members had a part to play in the success of Scarpetta, Ricky’s authentic Italian restaurant.
Ricky Turilli is known as the “Big Boss” at Scarpetta. He opened the Italian eatery in 2019 when he decided retirement was not for him. The Big Boss has been in the food industry for over 40 years.

The deli’s namesake belongs to the Turilli family’s beloved patriarch.
Lello is short for Rafaello, the name of Ricky Turilli’s late father. Rafaello Turilli moved to Cape Town with his brother after the Second World War ended. Nonno Lello was a mechanic by trade but was born with an aptitude and talent for cooking.
Lello was Ricky’s main source of food inspiration and was the head chef at Scarpetta before his passing.

The products that Lello’s Deli stocks are as diverse and colourful as Italian varieties of tomatoes.
Speaking of Italian tomatoes, their inventory of San Marzano tomatoes is limited. The Turilli call San Marzanos “the Gucci of all tomatoes”. They attribute their deliciousness to their low-acid flavours that burst with Italy.
