Cape Town Opera presents Sondheim’s A Little Night Music

Romance, wit, heartbreak and some of musical theatre’s most beloved melodies take centre stage this winter as Cape Town Opera presents Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed A Little Night Music at Theatre on the Bay.

Running from 30 June to 12 July, the production brings together an impressive cast of South African stage talent, including Aviva Pelham, Samantha Peo, Jonathan Roxmouth, Marcel Meyer, Kate Normington and Brittany Smith.

Set in turn-of-the-century Sweden, the Tony Award-winning musical unfolds over a single midsummer weekend as former lovers cross paths, marriages are tested and romantic entanglements spiral into both comedy and chaos. Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night, the story is celebrated for its sharp humour, emotional depth and timeless exploration of love, longing and second chances.

Directed by acclaimed theatre-maker Fred Abrahamse, the production promises an intimate and sophisticated theatrical experience, perfectly suited to the setting of Theatre on the Bay. Audiences can also look forward to one of the most celebrated scores in musical theatre history, including the iconic Send in the Clowns.

Combining elegance, romance and razor-sharp storytelling, A Little Night Music is set to be one of Cape Town’s standout theatre productions this winter.
