David Kramer’s Orpheus McAdoo Returns to Artscape in 2025
Back by popular demand, Orpheus McAdoo returns to the stage with a story that changed musical history.
Written and directed by David Kramer, this celebrated production tells the true story of the Virginia Jubilee Concert Company. In the 1890s, this African-American group toured South Africa, bringing jubilee singing to local audiences for the first time.
Their performances blended spirituals, early folk, ragtime, minstrel songs, and South African melodies. The result is a vibrant, soul-stirring celebration of music and identity.
Orpheus McAdoo was more than a singer. He was a bridge between cultures, creating deep and lasting connections. This musical brings his legacy to life with rich storytelling and powerful performances. It explores the impact of music during a time of change, both in America and South Africa.
The show ran for months on Broadway and in London’s West End. Now, South African audiences can experience it once again. Critics call it “groundbreaking”, “moving”, and “unforgettable”.
