The Hout Bay & Llandudno Art Fair

January 30 @ 5:00 pm - February 2 @ 10:00 pm

R195 - R350

The inaugural Hout Bay and Llandudno Art Fair will showcase the incredible talent of artists in two of Cape Town’s most vibrant creative suburbs by providing a platform for both those starting their journey as collectors and seasoned buyers seeking to add unique pieces to their collections.

The fair will benefit a programme that seeks to develop the next generation of talent from under-resourced communities. It will be held over four days, from Thursday, 30 January, to Sunday, 2 February, with the main exhibition at the Ghuba Gallery in Hout Bay.

In addition, a series of events and workshops will highlight the world-class art scene in this picturesque part of the Mother City.

A portion of proceeds from ticket sales for the fair will go to Lalela.

This organisation provides educational arts for youth from under-resourced communities to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit.

The featured exhibition, ‘Dual Currents’, will showcase the interplay of nature and artistry, promising to captivate and inspire and offer a glimpse into the creative heart of the community.

Artists such as Grace Cross, Irma Setter, Imraan Christian and Schalk van der Merwe, among many others, will have their creations take centre stage.

The varied collection of artists will be displaying paintings, photography, ceramics and mixed media, which will be available for purchase on the day within a wide range of price points.

‘The number of submissions for the Fair exceeded our expectations with over 100 artists and 470 pieces of work put forward. The total value of submissions was over R4 million,’ said Samantha Whittaker, founder of Curatorial Edge, a Cape Town-based business that specialises in art sourcing, curation and exhibition production.

‘What is more remarkable is that 95% of the artists live in Hout Bay or Llandudno, and the other 5% have a strong connection to the community having lived here in the past […] We are honoured to have such a diverse and talented group of artists in our exhibition and the selection of the final list of pieces to be included was incredibly difficult given the standard of the submissions,’ said Whittaker.

There will be an exclusive preview evening at Ghuba Gallery on Thursday, 30 January, from 5pm to 7pm where guests will get the opportunity to meet the incredible artists behind the masterpieces and gain personal insight into their creative journeys, as well as have the first opportunity to purchase the artwork on display.

Tickets to this event are limited and priced at R350 per person, which includes a champagne reception, canapés and live music.

This exclusive event is perfect for art collectors and anyone passionate about discovering extraordinary local works, as tickets are available online.

The official opening night of the Fair will be on Friday, 31 January, from 5pm to 9pm.

Tickets, which include a complimentary welcome drink and live music, are selling at R195 per person online.

The fair will continue on Saturday, 1 February and Sunday, 2 February, from 10am to 4pm with a free entrance fee. This will be a chance for families to come and enjoy the art that has yet to be sold and maybe purchase a piece or two themselves.

Workshops

As part of the fair, there will be four workshops, with limited space, all held at LUMI in Hout Bay, where participants can hone their skills and create their own special piece of art. They are:

  • Impressionistic Flowers with Kerri Sassen (Saturday, 1 February, 9am to 11am, R900)
  • Make your own Silk scarf workshop with Grace Cross (Saturday, 1 February, 12pm to 2pm, R1 250)
  • Exploring the Fluidity of Watercolours with Candice Christie (Sunday, 2 February, 9am to 11am, R650)
  • Vibrant Landscapes with Marc Tondori (Sunday, 2 February, 12pm to 2pm, R950)

‘The workshops have been carefully chosen to provide a variety of opportunities for participants to engage their artistic talent and learn from several of Cape Town’s top creatives,’ said Georgina Vintin, a ceramic artist, systemic psychotherapist and owner of Clay by Georgina.

‘It is a chance to challenge yourself as a beginner or for those who have already learned their skill, to create an unforgettable piece of art for your own home,’ Vintin added.

The limited spaces for these events are filling up fast, so to book a place or learn more, visitors can email Bianca at [email protected].

Lalela

One of the primary drivers behind the Hout Bay and Llandudno Art Fair will be to benefit Lalela.

Established in 2010, the organisation runs educational arts programmes in primary and high schools in under-resourced settings across the Western Cape, Maboneng in Johannesburg and Zimbabwe.

Through art, they promote both creative and critical thinking among young people in their programmes.

Lalela’s #lifechangingart programmes inspire learners to achieve academic excellence, set life goals, pursue fulfilling careers and develop into leaders, entrepreneurs and active citizens.

‘Our roots are deeply connected to Hout Bay, where Lalela was born 15 years ago, and we are thrilled to be part of the first-ever Hout Bay and Llandudno Art Fair,’ said Firdous Hendricks, Lalela executive director.

‘This initiative is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredible artwork of several Lalela learners, alumni and facilitators, who have submitted their pieces alongside other local artists,’ Hendricks added.
