Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September at the age of 96, placing King Charles III on the throne, and traditionally the monarch of the United Kingdom stays at Buckingham Palace, which has been the case since the reign of Queen Victoria.
However, King Charles III will not stay at Buckingham Palace and deems it unfit “for purpose in the modern world” and will remain at Clarence House, the home he shares with his wife, the Queen Consort Camilla, for the next five years while the Palace undergoes a major revamp.
The pair will travel between three different residences with Clarence House being their primary home, they will spend two days out of the week at Windsor Castle and their weekends will be spent at Sandringham House.
According to the British newspaper – The Times, King Charles III is “no fan of the big house” as he calls the palace and feels no attachment to Buckingham Palace – concerned that its “upkeep, both from a cost and environmental perspective, is not sustainable”.
The renovations and repairs to the palace’s East Wing are said to include new wiring, plumbing and heating, and is about halfway into the 10-year renovation project plan, a plan that cost 369 million pounds and is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
The Royal house swop:
The line of succession affects where each member of the Royal Family will live.
Now that Charles is king, Prince William becomes the Prince of Wales and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales and should therefore move into Clarence house, where the former Prince of Wales still resides.
Once The king moves into Buckingham Palace, Prince William and his family will move from their current residence at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor to Clarence House.
