The United States’ newly confirmed ambassador, Brent Bozell, has said he will press Pretoria to withdraw its ICJ case against Israel, putting the court action at the centre of his early diplomatic work, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According EWN Bozell told senators that Washington views the South African filing as an urgent foreign policy matter and that he will use all available diplomatic channels to address it. The Senate confirmed his nomination on 18 December 2025.

‘There is an injustice in this filing and it must be addressed,’ Bozell said during his confirmation hearings, signalling a direct campaign to influence Pretoria’s legal strategy.
South African leaders have repeatedly defended the ICJ action as an appeal to international law. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola told the Financial Times that there is ‘no chance’ Pretoria will withdraw the case, adding that standing by principle matters for the rule of law.
Legal scholars say the dispute will test relations between two longstanding partners and place ordinary families on both sides at the front of diplomatic debate. ‘The court decision has weight beyond law; it speaks to moral responsibility,’ one analyst told Reuters.
Observers warn that Bozell’s pledge could sharpen tensions and provoke heated public debate in South Africa as the ICJ process moves toward oral hearings.
