According to People.com police identified the suspected shooter as 56‑year‑old Robert Dorgan. He was a father of one of the players, who died at the scene from an apparent self‑inflicted wound, Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said at a press briefing.
Investigators believe the attack was a targeted family dispute, though they continue to piece together the events that led to the opening of fire.
Mayor Donald Grebien described the attack as ‘a terrible tragedy’ in what should have been a celebratory event for young athletes and their families.
Witnesses recounted chaotic moments as spectators and players fled for safety when the shots rang out in the stands. A bystander intervened to subdue the suspect before law enforcement arrived, authorities said.
‘This was not about the game,’ said hockey parent Melissa Dunn, reflecting the shock and grief felt across the community.
Officials have not released the identities of the victims but confirmed all students at the event are safe and accounted for.
