Thousands have taken to the streets in the Iran protests over soaring prices and a collapsing rial. The situation has now morphed into civil unrest and state repression, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Official data and independent analysts say inflation and food prices have surged, with point-to-point figures ranging from roughly 50% in official counts to estimates of food inflation as high as 70% by some research groups.
The Iranian government imposed a nationwide internet and telecommunications blackout from Thursday. The cut has left large parts of the country isolated and made independent verification of events difficult.
Internet monitors and international outlets reported connectivity near zero for days (Reuters).
Security forces moved to contain protests and carried out raids. State and semi-official media said people described as leaders were detained in those operations, with one report citing at least 200 arrests of so-called organisers.
Rights groups meanwhile say dozens have been killed in the crackdown and that children are among the dead. CNN reports 78 have been killed. A statement by Mohammad Movahedi Azad, Attorney General of the Islamic regime ‘saying that execution sentences will be issued for arrested protesters’.

Analysts warn the unrest could spread to energy and logistics networks if oil and port workers join strikes. That would deepen pressure on Tehran and add a regional economic risk.
