South Africa is emerging as one of the most balanced freelance markets in the world, with new global data pointing to a remarkably narrow earnings gap between men and women working independently online.
A recent global analysis by Remitly for Freelancers shows that South Africa posts a gender pay gap of just 3.9%, placing it second worldwide for freelancer pay equality, behind Croatia.
The findings are based on earnings data drawn from more than 58,000 freelancers across major online work platforms, including Upwork, comparing similar roles across countries.
What makes the numbers particularly striking is how closely aligned average hourly earnings are. Women freelancers in South Africa reportedly earn around R567,62 ($34.26) per hour, while men earn approximately R590,48 ($35.64) for comparable work.
The report also places South Africa’s ‘Freelancer Equal Pay Day’ on January 15, a symbolic marker suggesting women effectively work about two additional weeks into the year to match men’s annual earnings.
While the national picture suggests near parity, the data reveals sharper contrasts when breaking down specific freelance roles.
In technical and data-heavy fields, women continue to earn less than their male counterparts. The widest gap appears in Computer Vision (AI) roles, where women reportedly earn 35.1% less.
Customer service work follows at 29.8%, while Data Engineering and Project Management show gaps of 18.4% and 16.1% respectively.
However, the report also highlights a reverse trend in several consulting and marketing categories, as women in Business Consulting earn 62.1% more than men on average, while Management Consulting shows a 55.6% premium.
Email Marketing and broader Marketing Consulting also lean in favour of women, with gaps of 52% and 45.1% respectively.
The broader study suggests South Africa is performing well in comparison to many larger freelance markets, where gender gaps remain significantly wider.
While ranking 53rd globally in the dataset overview, its narrow overall earnings gap positions it among the more equal digital labour markets analysed.
This comes at a time when freelance and remote work continues to expand across South Africa’s urban centres, particularly in sectors like tech, design, consulting, and digital marketing, industries where global clients increasingly hire South African talent due to competitive rates and strong skill levels.
Take a look below of a snapshot of the countries with the widest freelancer gender pay gaps worldwide, with South Africa ranking 53rd globally and recording one of the smallest gaps among the nations analysed.
