Western Cape police have confirmed that a young boy was killed near Maitland station on Tuesday morning when he fell from a train and was hit by a second train.

Captain FC Van Wyk says circumstances surrounding an incident whereby a 12-year-old boy who was knocked by a train and fatally injured at about 09:45 yesterday morning at Maitland Railway Station are under investigation.

He is believed to be a pupil and was wearing his school uniform when the accident took place. Emergency medical services responded to the scene, and police were on site to investigate the incident.

One line was closed while investigations took place, and all northern trains from #3412 deviated via Ysterplaat until the investigation was completed at 12:45.

The police’s Noloyiso Rwexana told EWN, “According to information, the boy was jumping from one carriage to another when he fell and was hit by another train.”

The boys friends received trauma counselling at Maitland SAPS.
