Benoni-born actress Charlize Theron is producing her first-ever reality competition show, which was released on Netflix on August 21. HyperDrive will test the limits of some of the most extreme drivers across the world as they zoom around the world’s biggest and baddest automotive obstacles.
Charlize shared the news of her new show on Instagram alongside a post with a picture of her and Stacey-Lee she wrote: “I’ve been wanting to get into the reality/competition TV game for a while and I’m SO excited to present to you a show I’m producing. It’s basically “The Fast, and The Furious” meets “American Ninja Warrior”, and in my biased opinion it’s pretty badass. AND I got to drift with a fellow South African so that’s a bucket list item I can happily cross off.”
One of the drivers is Stacey-Lee May, is one of South Africa’s best-known spinners. Born in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, 21-year-old May started spinning early in her life. After she was bullied in high school, her father decided to teach her how to spin at the tender age of 16 years old to help build her confidence.
Her spinning journey has taken her around the world, as she has been featured in documentaries shot in London and New York, and will head to Pakistan soon to represent South Africa in a motor show.
Her car is a famous pink and grey BMW, and she chose the colour to honour the memory of her grandmother. “The color of my car represents Breast Cancer Awareness because my grandmother fought breast cancer. Unfortunately, she lost the battle and I am showing people that I support them as they go through this sickness,” she said in an interview earlier this year.
She also runs a soup kitchen in the Eldorado Park area once a month, and has an annual winter drive to provide blankets and non-perishable items to those in need.
