The Western Cape community is urged to be cautious when near the coastline over the weekend after an alert from the SA Weather Service warned of adverse weather conditions. Storm conditions, strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions have been predicted from late Saturday into Sunday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is asking members of the public to be aware and careful over the weekend as the New Moon Spring Tide will peak on Saturday, September 28 bringing rough sea conditions to the Cape’s coastline.
Higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides can be expected on into the new week as well. Strong rip currents will also be active around the coastline and members of the public are urged to be careful while swimming at beaches, and to remain within the protected lifeguard areas marked with red and yellow flags.
“We strongly advise against crossing flooding rivers or swimming in rivers near to a coastal river mouth. We urge parents to ensure that their children have responsible adult supervision in or around water. We encourage the public to follow the SA Weather Service forecasts and monitor their alerts and changes in weather forecasts over the next 48 hours,” says NSRI’s Craig Lambinon.
Boaters, sailboarders, and paddlers are reminded to wear their life-jackets at all times while aboard their crafts.
Anglers fishing along the shoreline should be cautious at all times and particularly during the Spring Tide. Rock anglers should wear lifejackets.
