Locals are being warned to steer clear of the Hout Bay area or to be careful when commuting, as protests in the area have led to road closures.

The Hout Bay Policing Forum urged citizens to avoid the area this morning as protests have become violent, with cars being stoned as they attempt to pass through the area.

“Main Road is closed between Hughendon and SAPS due to protestors. Protests are also starting at the SAPS Circle so avoid the area. Protesters are stoning vehicles trying to cross the SAPS circle, AVOID the area,” said the Forum on their Facebook page.

Litter has filled the roadway along Main Road and tyres are burning along the roadside in various streets as well.

The protests continue on from yesterday, August 2.

According to reports from residents, gunshots were heard ringing through the area. Rubbish and tree stumps were also being burned in Penzance Street, said Jermaine Carelse, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

Queries to SAPS on the reason for the protest have gone unanswered at the time of publication.
