In most of Cape Town’s sub-districts, COVID-19 cases are decreasing or flattening, with the exception of Khayelitsha, which recorded a slight increase in cases.
The number of new positive cases has fluctuated over the past few weeks, according to the provincial Health Department. However, it dropped to below 20% last week.
The department said that it was recording 192 cases per day at the end of the week, compared to 233 cases in the preceding week and 20 000 tests are conducted per week, with less than 10% of tests returning a positive result.
The department said that the small increase in infections in Khayelitsha is “not a cause for concern at this stage” and that they will “closely monitor all increases.”
“A similar scenario is being experienced in the Rural areas with some areas in George having seen a small increase in cases. Fewer cases have been recorded in last few days with most cases being in the 20-30-year age group. Similarly, in Bitou (Knysna), there have been small increases (19 new cases).”
The department said that they have not identified any clear clusters in Knysna and have determined that the increase in cases is a result of local travellers who returned to Bitou and tested positive for COVID-19.
As of Sunday, November 8 the Western Cape has had 119 242 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 110 365 recoveries and 4397 deaths.
The province currently has 4480 active cases.
The national recovery rate now stands at 92%, according to Minister of Health Dr Zwelini Mkhize.
