The Shoprite Group has stated that they are working “around the clock” to restock and rebuild stores affected in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng after civil unrest saw looters completely clean out stores, reports Times Live.
The civil unrest currently gripping the nation has seen communities without access to food and other necessities. However, the retail group has stated that they are prioritising the safety of customers and employees and will reopen stores for business once it is safe to do so.
“While we have been affected by the violence, looting, arson and vandalism, we are doing everything in our power to restock shelves as quickly as possible,” the supermarket group said.
The Group has condemned the violence, stating that food security and various other challenges have simply increased due to the incredible destruction and mayhem sweeping the nation.
“The mayhem and destruction are everyone’s loss, particularly in a country ravaged by a poor economy and joblessness, which have been worsened by the pandemic. The riots are only making our challenges, including food security, greater.
“We are especially grateful to our loyal customers, many of whom have offered to help with cleanup operations. We assure our customers that we are working day and night to continue to feed and support the nation,” said the group.
While other provinces, such as the Western Cape, have remained relatively unscathed from the destruction and mayhem, there have been a few incidents.
Several videos that are doing the rounds on social media show alleged protest action in Muizenberg on Wednesday, July 14. However, residents reportedly took to the streets to voice their concerns regarding housing and other service delivery issues and are not related to looting.
