My brain is packed with all things Olympics. It has to be my favourite sporting event, and I had to wait an extra year for these games, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Robyn Simpson. Whether it’s athletics, showjumping, skateboarding or archery – I’m here for it all. It’s one of the few times (every four, plus one, years) that I’m not on the hunt for ‘something good’ to watch on TV.
At every event, the commentators never fail to mention the hours of hard work and dedication that Olympic athletes put in just to get to the games – right down to the number of hours they sleep for optimal performance. Could this be one step closer to Olympic napping? I might be in for a chance.
Between the training, conditioning, optimal eating and sleeping, I started to wonder if any of these athletes had time for anything else. What other hobbies do Olympic athletes have?
Turns out, my wonderings have not been met with disappointment. A photograph of gold medallist synchronised diving Olympian, Tom Daley is going viral for the most adorable hobby of them all: knitting.
“Knitting is my mindfulness, how I find my calm, how I stay focused. I’m obsessed!” said Daley on the Olympics official Instagram post.

What on Earth was he knitting? A jersey for Izzy The Frenchie (a French bull dog), of course. The athlete made the announcement on his Instagram story.
Meet the lucky pooch.

He also let us in on his latest garment.
The Olympic champion has an Instagram account dedicated to his knitted creations with a whopping 598K following.
Not only that, but Daley has created a charity fund for his now famous ‘Chunky Rainbow Jumper’, where he aims to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity.

“Not only can you win the jumper, but you will help so many people!” he says on the Crowdfunder website.
Olympic champion, world class knitter, and creator of the rainbow jersey of my dreams. To top it all off, he makes personally crafted doggy ‘jumpers’, too. I think I have finally found my soul mate.
