The global tourism industry has taken a huge knock over the last year and a half, with a worldwide pandemic resulting in endless travel restrictions for those eager to indulge their wanderlust.
However, there may be some good news on the horizon. The Biden administration has announced that they are currently working on a plan that will require travellers making their way to the United States to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This will allow the country to eventually lift the stifling travel restrictions that have been stopping global travellers from entering the country, reports SABC News.
Wanderlusters will have to hold off on purchasing their plane tickets, however, as the administration stated that restrictions are not ready to be lifted at the moment. This is due to the surging COVID-19 numbers that have been attributed to the Delta variant currently wreaking havoc around the world.
But a plan is currently in motion, states the White House.
“In order to have a new system ready for when we can reopen travel, a phased approach that over time will mean, with limited exceptions, that foreign nationals travelling to the United States (from all countries) need to be fully vaccinated.”
“Working groups are developing a policy and planning process to be prepared for when the time is right to transition to this new system,” the official continued.
In July, the United States decided to add South Africa onto their “Do Not Travel” classification list, reports IOL. This came after concerns regarding the spread of the contagious Delta variant, which has seen a rise in COVID numbers in SA. The list advises US citizens on which countries are best to avoid when travelling.
