Mervyn Gers Ceramics, internationally renowned for their exquisite handmade dinnerware, custom-made designs, distinctive tiles and striking décor items, has launched a new range of très chic candle holders. If Eskom is going to leave us in the dark, we might as well light up our homes in style, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Robyn Simpson.
“We’re always looking at ways in which we can expand our offering and found there was a need for candle holders, both in the industry as well as private homes. Our range comes in various sizes and colours, and some can also be used as flower vases by default,” says Gers.
Rich in texture, colour and pattern, these pieces have found their way into top restaurants, game lodges, hotels as well as leading local and international retail outlets. “In South Africa, we continuously need to cope with load shedding. At least one can make it a bit more romantic at candle light,” he adds.
I’ve paired my gorgeous green candle holder with a hot pink candle and the results are quintessentially quirky. Just how I love my home decor.
Housed in a three-storey studio in Paarden Island, boasting 13 kilos and employing over 40 staff, Mervyn Gers Ceramics is a sustainable job creation success story. This means that these stunning holders aren’t just supporting candles, but the income of these incredibly talented locals.
“We’re immensely proud of every individual we employ. Bear in mind that each of our products passes through 22 pairs of hands before it gets to the end-user. Although most of our employees are highly-skilled, we’re committed to providing opportunities for them to grow and acquire new skills, and many are artists in their own right,” Gers concludes.
Their glazes are inspired by the varied Southern Africa landscapes and include Bakoven, Blouberg, Blue Onyx, Churchhaven, Fern, Fynbos, Green Onyx, Harbour, Langebaan, Madumbe, Monkey Apple, Moss, Ostrich Egg, Paternoster, Pond, Rock Pool and Veld.
Candle holders are available from Mervyn Gers Ceramics and Yuppie Chef. Prices start at R132.
