A Stellenbosch school teacher who has reportedly been accused of sexual misconduct relating to a learner has resigned.
The incident occurred at Idas Valley Primary School with the teacher being arrested on September 22, reports IOL. However, the accused was released on bail on October 8.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that the incident took place after school hours and not on the school premises.
The school released a statement via their Facebook Page earlier this week to address the serious issue and reassure parents. While the school confirmed that the teacher was no longer working on the premises, they could not provide further comment regarding the incident. While the safety of learners was reiterated by the principal via the statement.
The dismissal of the teacher is a far cry from stats released in June, which indicated that nine teachers who were found guilty of sexual harassment are still employed by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).
