On Saturday morning, November 20, the Gentles family from Tafelsig Mitchells Plain watched in horror as their house and several other homes burnt to the ground, leaving a total of 19 adults and 12 children destitute.

Panic ensued and amidst the chaos, Fiebie the familys’ beloved dog ran into the burning house to find her family. Fiebie was soon overcome by so much smoke and intensity of the blaze that she collapsed.
Thankfully, she was spotted by her owners’ brother who without any hesitation ran into the burning house to save her. By the time he reached Fiebie, the roof was alight and the temperature in the room was hot enough to melt the soles of his shoes.
The situation was extremely dangerous and the pair beat a hasty retreat to the safety of a neighbour’s house where they drenched her in cold water and managed to calm her down.
Despite having just lost everything the family selflessly put the needs of Fiebie first and arranged for her to be evacuated to the Animal Welfare Society of SA’s care.
“Our Hospital Team had been alerted to her imminent arrival by one of our colleagues, Junaid van Staden who also serves the local community and who
went out of his way to help”, says the Animal Welfare Society of SA.
Fiebie sustained serious burns to her under-belly and has severely scorched ears. She also succumbed to several localised burns to the rest of her body, but the Animal Welfare Society of SA are confident that brave Fiebie will make a full recovery and be reunited with devoted owner in time for Christmas.
“We are hoping that animal lovers from across the Cape Metro will join us in celebrating the selflessness of this amazing family and assist us by contributing towards Fiebie’s substantial care bill – because she is clearly deserved of everyone’s love and support at this tough time”, concluded the Animal Welfare Society of SA.
