A 34-year-old school teacher from Atlantis is out on bail following his arrest on a charge of sexual grooming. He was the one to turn himself in.
Well-known and respected in his community as a teacher of Wesfleur Primary School, the charge came as a shock to people who knew him.
It’s reported that the teacher handed himself over to the police on Monday whilst in the presence of his attorney. The charges came as a result of reportedly inappropriate conversations with a 14-year-old pupil on Instagram which allegedly included the teacher asking the girl for photographs of herself.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk expressed that a case has been opened. The teacher was granted bail of R 1 5000 and on strict conditions.
According to IOL, one community member expressed that despite the shock of the news of the ‘role model’, no one is above the law regardless of stature.
Additionally, the Western Cape Education Department is looking into the matter.
The teacher has not yet been suspended.
Meanwhile the Western Cape police on Monday launched their campaign called 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.
This year’s theme is: The year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – moving from awareness to accountability, as EWN reports.
