Cape Town’s very own Craig Marshall captured footage that many can only dream of — a pod of at least 50 Humpback whales spotted off the coast of Mouille Point, Cape Town.
“On December 4 at 9am, the Dolphin Inn Guesthouse owner, Paul Griffiths alerted me to the pod of feeding Humpbacks just off the coastline of Mouille Point,” Craig told Cape {town} Etc.
He grabbed his gear and rushed off, capturing the footage just before he lost battery life on his camera. “This moment was a true example of every film makers dream. Right time right place,” he added.
The pod of whales are regular visitors to the Atlantic Seaboard region at this time each year. “Locals have seen two pods of varying sizes in the last month and this time the pods were united into a super pod,” says Craig.
A super pod is a name given to a large group of whales or dolphins from different extended families (known as pods) in places with a high abundance of food. This makes the sighting extra special.
This lucky local captured a “feeding frenzy” at its finest, and we’re so glad that he’s shared it with us to marvel over. The sighting is yet another reminder of how much we have to lose if we don’t step up and protect our marine life.
