The holiday season has seen an influx of motor vehicle accidents as traffic volumes remain high before schools reopen. The most recent incident comes after two people were killed and 12 others injured when a taxi rolled on the N1 near Touws River in the Karoo.
According to SABC News, it’s believed the driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to veer off the road, while emergency medical services and the police fled to the scene.
The crash took place around 5:40am on Saturday, January 8 as the taxi was travelling towards Cape Town, and Touws River police are said to be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Two people were fatally injured, and 12 slightly injured. The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” said SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg as per News24.
This incident follows the death of six people, who were killed in a crash on the N1 highway near Laingsburg in the Western Cape on New Year’s Day, while five young women died in in a crash on the R60 between Worcester and Roberston in the Boland on December 30.
Motorists are urged to be cautious during this period.
