Many have claimed that print is dead, with safe spaces such as libraries bearing the brunt of a social media and smartphone-obsessed society.
Not so, say a group of individuals who have taken to the streets of Plumstead to protest the shutting down of Plumstead Library.
According to IOL, the library is set to close come June next year, but residents have pleaded with the City of Cape Town to move this oasis for many to another one of its properties in the area.
Unfortunately, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been pinpointed as one of the reasons for the closure. A decline in revenue has forced the City to make painful budget cuts, and as the library is currently located in a rented property, its budget for external leases have been slashed, resulting in the subsequent closure.
Residents would now have to make use of Southfield and Wynberg libraries as they are close to public transport.
Plumstead residents do not appear to be too happy with the alternatives, with many stating that libraries, as public spaces, should be open to all communities.
Tygervalley Library faces a similar situation, with the long-standing library facing closure at the end of April. The resources within these libraries will be reallocated to other libraries.
