The Bellville CBD has long been a busy hub for commuters and businesses, but the area has been rocked with poor infrastructure and petty crime.
However, the City of Cape Town is attempting to uplift the area with various upgrades planned. Upgrading Kruskal Avenue, a major pedestrian route from Bellville Station into Bellville CBD, is one of the first major upgrades of the project.
Along with this, the upliftment will include Lower Blanckenberg Street and will extend from Cross Street (south of Voortrekker Road) to Bellville Station, the City said in a statement.
“The upgrading of the hard and soft landscaping of Kruskal Avenue will act as a catalyst in the regeneration of the surrounding area.
Our main aim here is to improve the pedestrian environment in the area and to create investor confidence in the Bellville CBD,” stated Deputy Mayor and the Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
To promote public participation, the City is urging residents to attend an open day on Wednesday, 6 April outside Middestad Mall entrance in order to view and offer input into the design proposals for the area.
A few of the upgrades include plans for the installation of new lighting; benches, paving, irrigation and public art. New trading bay locations and parking types have also been included.
According to the City, the finalisation of the design should happen later this year. However, construction will is planned to take place mid-2023.
