I’ve been on a bit of an obsessive fitness journey of late, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido. The COVID-19 pandemic has left me a little lazier, slightly rounder, but a whole lot wiser. While I’d prefer to climb a flight of stairs without having to catch my breath every time I get to the top, the thought of sweating it out in a gym is less than appealing.
I decided to focus my attention on something that I can’t seem to get enough of – nature – diving into every Capetonian’s go-to weekend activity – hiking.
Did you know that Table Mountain National Park has around 350 hiking trails? While the thought of conquering one of the natural wonders of the world sounds like something I would love to brag about and add to my resume, I wanted to start a little closer to home.
Tygerberg Nature Reserve is nestled in the Northern Suburbs and offers picturesque 360-degree views that stretch from Muizenberg to Blouberg. It really is a sight to behold, and you don’t have to break a sweat to enjoy these views. However, for the purpose of this article, we’re looking to get our hearts pumping and those endorphins cruising.
Here are a few hiking trails that you can enjoy when exploring this 300-hectare nature reserve:
Tortoise
The first time I decided to try this trail I thought: “Tortoise, this should be easy.” Depending on your fitness level this can either be a toughie or easy as a Sunday morning. This trail does offer spectacular views of the area, but it does have quite a steep incline, so you’ll find yourself going uphill for a bit. But again, the views are worth it!
Duiker
The Duiker Trail is one of my favourites if I’m looking to simply enjoy the views while still getting my legs moving. It turns off from the Tortoise Trail and circles around the dam that is located at the bottom of the reserve. There are a few benches to sit and enjoy the plethora of birdlife that call this spot home, and it’s a great little trail to enjoy if you’re looking to explore a different side of the reserve.
Golden Mole
The Golden Mole trail offers a different perspective of the city, and while you may not catch a glimpse of Table Mountain from this part of the reserve, you’ll be treated to some incredible views of the Northern Suburbs and beyond. Compared to a number of other trails in the reserve, this one is a little longer, around 3,6 kilometres. If you stop and catch your breath, you’ll find yourself wandering past a number of lush houses. There are a few spots that require you to put a little more effort into it as it goes uphill, but again, it’s all worth it.
Wild Olive
The Wild Olive is a short trail, but it’s one of my favourites. To get to it, you’ll have to head onto the Upper Golden Mole trail before finding a board that will direct you towards this stunning trail. It’s quite steep as you head down, so be careful not to slip. This trail meanders through lush greenery and towering trees with a small little stream. It really is worth the detour!
Watsonia
This trail is considered moderately challenging, but again, it depends on your fitness level. It should take around 1 hour 25 minutes to complete and is a trail that feels like it’s off the beaten track. There is a portion that is incredibly steep with portions that may have you climbing (careful, there are a few loose rocks) but this nature reserve is renowned for its views, so VIEWS.
If the thought of hiking any of these trails is enough to leave you tired, no worries! The reserve has an incredible picnic spot that’s perfect for catching the sunset and enjoying a bite to eat. Glorious views of Table Mountain, the natural fynbos and the ocean in the distance make Tygerberg Nature Reserve a wonderful place to enjoy.
