Bid the weekend adieu under the stars on a sunset hike at Muratie Wine Estate this Sunday evening.
We’re all well aware of the highly popular full moon hike up Cape Town’s much loved Lion’s Head, but why not change things up a bit? Dress in your warmest layers and head to Muratie Wine Estate in Stellenbosch this weekend for their sunset hike.
Sunset Hikes @ Muratie is hosted by Dirtopia, an outdoor, off-road event and trail construction company. They constructed a popular circular hiking trail that starts at the Trail Centre at Muratie, reaches a viewpoint with stunning views of the Winelands and Table Mountain, and continues down a path that cuts through the forest. The route is approximately 3.5 kilometres in total and can be completed in 60 minute without any stops along the way.
But you will no doubt want to stop! The beautiful scenery at the viewpoint has made this a choice picnic spot, so bring a blanket, pack a snack basket and a bottle of Muratie wine, and make yourself comfortable while you marvel at the picturesque sunset. There are also snacks, coffee and Muratie wine (per glass or per bottle) available to purchace at the Trail Centre.
Timing is key for this hike. You don’t want to miss the sunset, which is expected to be at 5.51pm this Sunday, or the moonrise at 5.26pm, so plan your arrival carefully. The hike up to the look-out point normally takes about 40 minutes, depending on your pace, but give yourself enough time to enjoy the walk and set up a picnic when you get to the top.
When you’re ready to head back, pack up your things, collect any litter from your picnic, and continue down the circular path. Remember to bring a flashlight or headlamp to help you see the the signs that guide hikers along the singletrack route. It should take about 20 to 30 minutes to complete the journey back to the Trail Centre.
Permits are required and booking is essential. Permits are R100 per person or R50 for children under ten years old and can be bought here.
Happy hiking!
