Stettyn Family Vineyards is a farm just outside small-town Villiersdorp in the Overberg region. This is a family-owned business, as the name suggests, is rich in history and tradition, and offers incredible wines and hospitality. It is definitely worth the drive to this welcoming wine farm, writes Rachelle from Cape {town} Etc, who visited Stettyn on Sunday morning.
The farm on which Stettyn Cellar is situated dates back to 1714 when the Dutch East India Company handed over the original farm to Free Burghers (early settlers at the Cape of Good Hope) Cloete and Radyn. Cloete and Radyn’s ancestors originated from the Stettin area in the former Prussia, hence the name. A century later, Stettyn farm was obtained by the Botha family in 1818 and has proudly been in the family for eight generations. The Stettyn Cellar itself was established in 1963 and have since produced incredible award-winning wines.
The farm’s location is characterised by cold winters and moderate summers, which is a favourable climate for the production of quality grapes. Barrel maturation, as well as the serious science of making good Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc has become a focus area for Stattyn Cellars. Expect smooth, cold-climate wines that make for easy drinking.
Stettyn Family Vineyards have lovely wine tasting on offer at their tasting room and very friendly staff to take care of you during your visit. When we arrived shortly after 11am, we were warmly greeted and provided with a complementary dessert wine to kick off our tasting. The tasting room itself is extremely spacious, with indoor and outdoor seating options available for any types of weather conditions. They are fully dog-friendly, and we indeed see one table with a small dog roaming around, so bring the fur kids along on the trip.
Stettyn offers two tasting options: a White Wine Tasting and a Red Wine Tasting, both including five wines for only R30 per tasting option. Their Signature wines are also availabe for an additional tasting at R10 per wine, except for their flagship Shackleton wine, which is not part of the tasting due to the limited stock available. We opted for the White Wine Tasting, which included the Stone White 2021, the Stone Rosé 2021, the Sauvignon Blanc 2021, the Chenin Blanc 2021 and the Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2021. Our favourites were the Stone White 2021 and the Chenin Blanc 2021, and we ended up buying a case of the Stone White to take home.
Delicious cheese and snack platters are also on the menu:
The Cheese Platter for two includes a selection of cold meats, bread, cheeses, crackers, pestos, marmalades, olives and soup, all for R235, and I can guarantee that it’s more than enough for two people. There’s also a smaller R100 snack platter that consists of the same foods, except for meats. Their platters are also customizable: guests can add certain items to their platters at a small cost per item.
After a lovely wine tasting and some snacks, visitors can treat themselves to the cake of the day or a comforting cup of coffee or tea. Stettyn also sell craft beer produced by Worcester’s first and finest craft brewery, Mountain Brewery Co. Try the popular Loadshed Lager, a lager that is primed with natural unfiltered fynbos honey, giving it a gentle honey arome and creamy head.
To celebrate the start of winter, Stettyn is giving visitors 15% discount on all our favourite Stettyn wines. We walked away with a case of Stone White 2021 for only R280 where it’s normally priced at R360, so hurry and schedule in a visit before this offer expires. If you do miss out on this particular offer, don’t worry. Stettyn regularly run specials on their wines, so visitors always have the opportunity to be spoiled. They also deliver nationwide; check out their website for more information on their wines and delivery options.
Vinyards that are located outside the typically visited regions of the Cape winelands or the Stellenbosch winelands might not receive as many visitors, but these less known vineyards often leave a longer-lasting impression. At Stettyn Family Vineyards, for instance, they “offer more than just wine tasting, you visit a stranger and leave a family.”
